Thanksgiving

It was a crazy but good Thanksgiving weekend around here.  On Friday the boys were off school which would have made for a nice long weekend but Jordon had to work.  We had some friends over on Friday night while Mark went to the Saskatoon Blades game with Brittany and Lee.

Saturday afternoon Mark played his last regular season game of the year.  We were going to go to the cabin but it would have been awfully late to make the trip.  Instead we got up early on Sunday and drove out and got there by noon.  It was quite a drive as Jordon is reviewing a 2013 Ford Focus ST which has a lot of horsepower, a six speed manual transmission, and easy integration with our iPod.  It also has a lot of trunk room as we had bought some planters to define the deck area in the back and brought those up as well as a bunch of blankets that I had washed.

Oliver was so excited it was almost as if he had guzzled and energy drink.  He wasn’t bad but just excited.  While Jordon tried to sleep, he kept talking and talking without stopping.  He was funny to listen to.

Finally we headed over to the renovated Kinney Memorial Lodge where they had the turkey, dressing, salads, turnips, potatoes, and desserts all ready to go.  Mark ate like it was his last meal while Oliver only cared about the desserts.  Jordon was disappointed in Mark for taking turnips but not eating them.  As Jordon says, “I really only care about the turnips”.  Mark didn’t seem to be that concerned with upsetting his father as he pointed out that Jordon hates scalloped potatoes.

After that we went back to the cabin, closed it up for the year and drove back to Saskatoon along a very dangerous stretch of Highway 16 where the dangerous driving can be rampant on weekend nights.  Sunday night was no exception as a truck passed up going 150 kph and instead of pulling back into the lane and slowing down, he kept right on driving forcing other cars to brake and hit the shoulder.  While Jordon drove, I called the Saskatoon RCMP and reported it.  8 minutes later they called back and asked for more details as they couldn’t find him.  The idiot must have pulled off and  went into Clavet or a side road.

We were home by 10 p.m. and asleep shortly afterwards.  It wasn’t long enough but it was a nice day and fun to see some good friends and neighbours at the lake.

The only sad part of it was that it has been 15 Thanksgivings since I have been able to spend it around my family.  I often feel sad because my mom and dad would really enjoy Thanksgiving at Arlington Beach but this was the first year I just gave up on the idea and resigned myself to never seeing them again.  It’s their loss but I can’t help but be frustrated that my kids will go their entire lives without knowing grandparents who are only five hours away from the cabin.
